The SAMRO Foundation is proud to announce the results of the 2015 edition of the Concerts SA Music Mobility Fund. Initiated in 2013 by the British Council’s Connect ZA and the SAMRO Foundation, this funding mechanism offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music-related activities. A total of 23 applications were successful and will be supported in South Africa (13 projects) and in the SADC region (10 projects), including countries such as Botswana, Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland.
Twenty three music projects supported for National and SADC Regional touring
This round’s recipients of regional touring support are Morayks, Hassanadas, Kyle Shepherd, The Undergrounds, Latinfluence, bFake featuring EJ Von Lyrik & DJ Fosta, Amandla Freedom Ensemble featuring Oscar Rachabane, Philani Ngidi & the Afro Divas, and the Cab2Strab Tour (7th Son, Crimson House, Kings Down South, and Ann Jangle). Recipients of the national touring fund are Guy Buttery, Marcus Wyatt’s Language 12, Julian Redpath, Movi M, Family First, Keenan Ahrends, Lieva Starker, Sevenic Stylic Music, The Great Magical Music & Minstrel Tour (with Michael Canfield, Nicole Theron, Greg Georgiades, Les Javan, Rian Malan and Rynier Prins), Offshore Jazz, Uptown Rhythm Collective, Battle of Saxes (Matthew Lombard and Karendra Devroop), and Wendy Oldfield & Paul Hanmer.
The Music Mobility Fund received 104 proposals ranging from established music practitioners to emerging musicians. Music professionals were invited to apply in March for funding from a National Mobility Fund and a Regional Mobility Fund (for projects taking place in SADC countries, except South Africa). The standard of submissions was extremely high, making the task of selecting successful applicants very difficult. The final selection was based on alignment with the objectives of the Music Mobility Fund and conditions as set out in the call for proposals.
Designed to help musicians, music industry professionals and organisations build on already established domestic success and develop connections, markets and audiences for their work, the fund provides support towards travel and transportation; per diems; material costs (hiring of backline and sound equipment), accommodation and visas.
