Pianist Thandi Ntuli premieres her new album Exiled on SADC live tour
Thandi Ntuli will be performing on quartet format accompanied by some of the best instrumentalists of South Africa’s young generation: Keenan Ahrends (guitar), Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums) and Benjamin Jephta (bass).
Upon her return from the Mzansi Jazz Encounters in Switzerland, Ntuli will present her music in Maputo during the weekend of mid-February, performing three concerts and delivering one workshop.
The performances will take place at beachfront restaurant Mar Na Brassa, at legendary spot Gil Vicente, and at the luxurious Polana Hotel, and the music workshop will be presented at Escola Nacional de Musica (National School of Music of Mozambique).
Continuing the mission of sharing her music with more southern African audiences, Thandi Nthuli will travel to Swaziland at the beginning of March to perform at cultural centre Alliance Française in Mbabane.
With the release of her highly acclaimed and independently released debut album The Offering (2014), Thandi did well to both introduce and establish herself as an important contributor to modern South African jazz, fast making an imprint in the local jazz scene with her unique voice.
Her sophomore album, Exiled (2018) is her latest offering whose release coincides with the beginning of her year as the recipient of the coveted Standard Bank Young Artist award for Jazz.
Release digitally on Thursday 1st February 2018, Exiled includes compositions by Ntuli which stretch across the boundaries of genre and features a selection of the cream of South African talent; including percussionist Tlale Makhene, poet Lebo Mashile and vocalist Vuyo Sotashe.
“This project was a very taxing one for me. I stretched myself far beyond what I did in the first album, often finding myself in new territory. So I am excited about the release because it was made with a lot of dedication and intention.” – Thandi Ntuli.
Thandi Ntuli’s Exiled SADC Tour is supported by Concerts SA through the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours. Additional support is provided in Mozambique by Lapas Productions, and in Swaziland by Legendary Events and Alliance Française Mbabane.
