Demiurge Quintet featuring Zibusiso Makhatini @ The Jazzy Rainbow

This performance by the Demiurge Quintet featuring Zibusiso Makhatini at The Jazzy Rainbow is part of the Concerts SA Venue Circuit which aims to foster a love and support for live music in our communities, as well as anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
Durban’s longest-running jazz lounge, The Jazzy Rainbow, in association with Concerts SA, launched its first straight jazz programme on the eve of Heritage Day in September2016 and is following up with the same concept in 2017. “#JazzyStraightAhead is about introducing regular, live, straight jazz concerts to our city in order to help keep the music alive,” says Oliver-Rene Haas. “
Zibusiso is a Pianist, Composer and Producer born and bred in Estcourt Kwa-Zulu Natal. His love for music came at the tender age of seven. Fond memories have been documented of his childhood photos where he is ﬁddling with music instruments and probing the existence of pitch, melody and harmony. Coming from a family of self-taught musicians inspired him to pursue music and also venture on a journey of experiencing music by learning the piano. After matriculating there was only one career wish for the young Zibusiso and that was of course studying music. Zibusiso auditioned to be a student at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and successfully passed the audition and began his life as a jazz and popular music piano student. Zibusiso’s sound would be deﬁned as world music with jazz being the main inﬂuence. He draws inspiration and inﬂuence from various eloquent musicians such as the late Bheki Mseleku, Mulgrew Miller, Osunlade and Mr Rauol K. Zibusiso has had the pleasure of taking part in the South Africa’s top music festivals like the annual National Arts Festival held in Grahamstown, Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Time of The Writer Festival and the Durban Jazz in July Festival. Zibusiso has also been selected in 2016 amongst UKZN’s ﬁnest young musician to tour Oslo Norway as part of the Nordic showcase and Oslo Jazz Festival. He has also recently been selected amongst the countries top young musician to be part of the prestigious Standard bank National Youth Jazz Band where the where conducted by the renowned South African saxophonist, composer and music educator, Buddy Wells. Together they performed at the 2017 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival. Apart from being a performer, Zibusiso Makhathini is an activist in the South African music scene and orally engage with the youth of South Africa on socio economic issues is also trying to change the stereotype of music being seen as just a hobby. He has committed his life to the improvement and well-being of South African Arts.
This showcase is taking place on Friday 13th October, performance begins at 7pm and entrance fee is 40 Rand including a free drink for students (T&C)

Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed within the SAMRO Foundation. Concerts SA receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SAMRO, the SAMRO Foundation and Concerts Norway. Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, and providing support to the sector through research and skills development for music professionals, the project aims to build a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
