Durban’s longest-running jazz lounge, The Jazzy Rainbow, in association with Concerts SA, launched its first straight jazz programme on the eve of Heritage Day in September2016 and is following up with the same concept in 2017. “#JazzyStraightAhead is about introducing regular, live, straight jazz concerts to our city in order to help keep the music alive,” says Oliver-Rene Haas. “

Zibusiso is a Pianist, Composer and Producer born and bred in Estcourt Kwa-Zulu Natal. His love for music came at the tender age of seven. Fond memories have been documented of his childhood photos where he is fiddling with music instruments and probing the existence of pitch, melody and harmony. Coming from a family of self-taught musicians inspired him to pursue music and also venture on a journey of experiencing music by learning the piano. After matriculating there was only one career wish for the young Zibusiso and that was of course studying music. Zibusiso auditioned to be a student at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and successfully passed the audition and began his life as a jazz and popular music piano student.   Zibusiso’s sound would be defined as world music with jazz being the main influence. He draws inspiration and influence from various eloquent musicians such as the late Bheki Mseleku, Mulgrew Miller, Osunlade and Mr Rauol K. Zibusiso has had the pleasure of taking part in the South Africa’s top music festivals like the annual National Arts Festival held in Grahamstown, Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Time of The Writer Festival and the Durban Jazz in July Festival. Zibusiso has also been selected in 2016 amongst UKZN’s finest young musician to tour Oslo Norway as part of the Nordic showcase and Oslo Jazz Festival. He has also recently been selected amongst the countries top young musician to be part of the prestigious Standard bank National Youth Jazz Band where the where conducted by the renowned South African saxophonist, composer and music educator, Buddy Wells. Together they performed at the 2017 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival.  Apart from being a performer, Zibusiso Makhathini is an activist in the South African music scene and orally engage with the youth of South Africa on socio economic issues is also trying to change the stereotype of music being seen as just a hobby.
